Ski Slopes Near Philadelphia


Instead of traveling hundreds of miles to west to Park City or north to mountains in Vermont, how about an hour road trip to Pennsylvania’s best mountain ranges for skiing and snowboarding action! Listed below are a couple hot spots that are a must hit when you’re looking to break in that new ski or snowboard equipment.


Big Boulder: 1 South Lake Drive, Lake Harmony, 570-443-8425
Distance from Philly: About 101 miles
Big Boulder, Jack’s Frost’s companion mountain, is another Pocono hot spot. You’ll find 15 slopes and trails, beginner through expert, a 475-foot vertical, 55 acres of skiable terrain, and nine lifts. Snowboarders will enjoy the Mountain Dew Terrain Park and half pipe, and non-slopes will love the 12 tubing chutes.

Also located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains, Camelback Ski Area has 34 trails on 160 skiable acres, an 800-foot vertical drop, and 15 lifts, including two high-speed quads, three triples, seven doubles, a surface lift at SunKid, and two tubing lifts. There’s also a snowboard half pipe, two terrain parks, and a wide selection of trails for all ability levels. Snowmaking and night skiing is offered on all trails.

Distance from Philly: 75 miles
Blue Mountain is located in Eastern Pennsylvania, one hour north of Philadelphia, with the greatest vertical in the state, 1,082 feet. It has 34 trails, four terrain parks, and a Big Airbag, with all terrain lighted for night skiing. Trails are serviced by nine lifts, including a high-speed detachable six-seater and quad lifts. Hone your skills in one of the three Learning Centers, one serviced by a triple chair. Or, snow tube on 19 slides and three tow lifts.

Located on more than 330 acres in Berks County, Bear Creek Mountain boasts 21 trails that will keep every level of skier or boarder entertained. Newbies will enjoy the expanded beginner area complete with a carpet lift and triple chair and pros will be challenged on “Sasquatch,” a black diamond trail with a 50 percent slope. There’s also a complimentary Ski Check at the base of the mountain.
